Bandhavgarh National Park

Once a private hunting ground for the Baghela Dynasty till 1968, Bandhavgarh today is a world famous national park for tiger photography.
A natural habitat for Tigers, Bandhavgarh was a piece of land was gifted by Lord Rama to his brother Laxmana, as per legend. The area is full of man made caves that are more than 2000 years old. Now, a site of the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger, it is one of the best place in the country to encounter the Big Cat!

Baghel Museum

A storehouse of the personal belongings and military equipments of Maharaja of Rewa. It exhibits the royal and jungle life of Bandhavgarh. Along with other treasures is the stuffed body of the first white tiger hunted by the Maharaja of Rewa.

Village Tala

A total reflection of an Indian village, Tala brings it in the most ethnic way. Find mud clustered houses, people smoking hookahs on a cot and other scenes that defied modernity. Tourists can find magnificent accommodations in the village with all amenities.

Mahaman Pond

The Pond near the Bandhavgarh Fort is surrounded by bamboo clumps and is visited by many herbivores and carnivores.

Kethika

Famous as the Pendanus Point, this place is full of aromatic plant called Kewra, which grows amid the jammu and arjun trees. A real floral treasure of Bandhavgarh Reserve.

Climber’s Point

The point in Bandhavgarh National Park offers an aerial view of the entire park full of Sal and Bamboo trees. Also found are the unique fauna like butea superba and bauhinia wahlii along with Sal trees.

Bari Gufa

Bari Gufa or “The Giant Cave” showcase is the largest man-made cave inside the park, dating back to the 10th century.

Three Cave Point

Visible from the Ganesh Hillock road, this place has some beautiful carvings that represent a perfect blend of the architecture from the ancient times. It is an ideal home of animals like leopards, tigers and sloth bears.

Rajbahera

This place is best viewed from the Bandhaini Hillock, along with sorks, vultures and herds of chital, samber and wild pigs.

The Shesh Shaya

An asset of the 10th century, the Shesh Shaya is a spectacular 11 meter long statue of Lord Vishnu laying under his eternal umbrella Shesh Nag. Nearby is a shivling and the statue of Lord Bramha. It is believed that Charan Ganga inflows from the foot of Lord Vishnu.

Cheshpur Water Fall

About 50 km from Bandhavgarh, the Cheshpur Water fall is an ideal location to enjoy a picnic.

Jwalamukhi Temple

The 10th century temple of the goddess Jwalamukhi on the bank of river “Charan Ganga” is highly revered by Hindus.

Fossil National Park

Home to 40 - 150 million old fossiles, this place sprawls over three villages in the buffer area of the national park. The petrified trunks of trees are categorized as Gymnosperms and Angiosperms- Monocotyledons, Bryophytes and palms.

Safari in Bandhavgarh National Park

The national park has 4 different zones where travellers can enjoy Jeep safari rides. Afternoon shift of Jeep Safari remains closed for visitors Every Wednesday. Morning & afternoon shifts remain closed on Holi festival in March.

Elephant Rides are available in the Magadhi Zone Bandhavgarh National Park from 8 am to 9 am & 9 am to 10 pm.

Flora and Fauna of Bandhavgarh National Park

The major fauna in the park include tiger, panther, spotted deer, sambar,blue bull, wild boar, barking deer, wild dog, leopard, wolf, jackal, sloth bear, wild pig, langur and monkey. Also a major part of the reserve is inhabited by Chameleon, viper, cobra, python, krait etc. Alongwith animals, the park is also home to about 250 species of birds mainly egret, jungle crow, peafowl, grey hornbill, red wattled lapwing, crested serpent eagle, quails, owls, parakeets and common teal. The vegetation of the park is tropical dry and moist deciduous. The main flora consists of sal, saja, tendu, aonla dhawda, jamun, salai, garari, bamboo etc. The forest is dominated by sal trees in the valleys, whereas lower slopes are full of bamboo plants.

Best Time to Visit Bandhavgarh National Park

The park receives maximum tourists between November and February because of the winter season. Summers (March to mid June) are good for seeing the tigers as they come out for water. In monsoon (July – August – September), the park remains closed for the visitors.

How to Reach

By Air

Nearest airport from the park is Khajuraho which is well connected with Delhi, Agra or Varanasi. From Khajuraho, you have to hire a cab/taxi and drive for 7-8 hours till Tala, the park entrance at Bandhavgarh.

By Rail

Nearest railway station is Umaria after Katani railway station, about 40 minutes drive to Nature Heritage. You can also take the overnight train from Delhi to Umaria and drive (30 minutes) to the park.

By Road

Buses and taxis are easily available from Jabalpur, Katni and Umaria for the Bandhavgarh National Park. To travel by road, jeeps are available for transfers. Khajuraho to Bandhavgarh distance is 250 Kms, (8 hrs drive).
